ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON“PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS” at JSS Law College Mysuru: 28th April, 2017:

The One Day Workshop on Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on 28th April, 2017 at JSS Law College, Mysuru which was organized in collaboration with National Law School of India University, Bangalore. JSS Law College expresses its gratitude to National Law School of India for their support to conduct this programme.

 

The main aim of this workshop was to discuss & implement the laws relating to prevention cruelty towards animals and to sensitize the community about the existing laws and rules which was discussed by various eminent persons present.

The inauguration was by-

Prof. (Dr.) R. Venkatrao, Vice Chancellor, NLSIU, Prof. (Dr.) M.K Ramesh, Professor, NLSIU, Prof. Prabhu swamy, Principal, JSS Law College, Dr.S.Nataraju, Vice-Principal, JSS Law College, Dr. Sairam Bhat, Associate Professor, NLSIU

Prof. (Dr.) R Venkat Rao spoke about the concepts and the idea of animal welfare. He started his talk by the idea of jurisprudence, where he described elaborately about the nature of animals, who are called animals and other relating concepts.

He quotes “Animal rights is the idea in which some or all, non-human animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives and their most basic interests such as the need to avoid suffering should be afforded  the same consideration as similar interests of human beings.”

There were three technical sessions followed by the paper presentations.

The first session was by Prof. (Dr.) M.K Ramesh. The concept of this session was Law and Animal Rights. They spoke that despite the proliferation of animal’s protection legislation, animals still has no legal right. The existing legislation was very much tied to the idea of human interest, whether protecting human sensibilities by outlawing cruelty, or protecting property rights by making sure the animals were not damage are some of the issues discussed.

Dr. Sairam Bhat spoke on the relevance of Law in protecting the Animal Rights. He explained the development of animal rights jurisprudence in India by quoting judicial pronouncements of jallikattu and other cases.

The second technical session was by  Dr. Nataraju, Vice Principal, JSS law College and Mr. Jagadish A T, Assistant Professor. JSS Law College. They discussed on various case studies and judicial pronouncement relating to animal cruelty of animals. The present issue of Man v/s Animal conflict was discussed. The reasons for conflicts were discussed.

The third session was relating to the aspects of Socio-Cultural and Religious challenges. It was chaired by Prof. (Dr.) M.D.Krishna, Principal, Vidyavikas Law College, Mysuru. The panel consisted of Prof. K.B. Vasudeva, Principal, Vidyavardhaka Law College, Mysuru, Prof. P. Shivananda Bharathi, Associate Professor & Controller of Examinations, JSS Law College, Prof. N S Govinda, Associate Professor, Kukke Subrahmanyeshwara College, Mangalore, Mr. Manjeri Subin Sunder Raj, Assistant Professor, NLSIU, This session was followed by paper presentations. The session was chaired by Prof. (Dr.) M.D.Krishna.  Prof. K.B. Vasudeva, Prof .M.M.Prabhuswamy, Dr.S.Nataraju, Prof.P. Shivanada Bharathi were present as panelists. Four papers were presented. The vote of thanks was given by Prof. Jagadish A.T.
