The Kolar district administration will take up a drive from August 15 to clear encroachments on tank beds. This initiative follows from the High Court of Karnataka’s directive to take steps to protect government properties such as tanks, feeder canals, ponds and roads from being encroached.
According to Deputy Commissioner D.K. Ravi, a survey of 38 tanks in all the five taluks has been completed and encroachments in other tanks will be identified in a phased manner within three months. Police protection for revenue officials was also assured. There was allegedly a move by the land mafia and the ruling party to exert pressure on the government to transfer the Deputy Commissioner for his stance against encroachments as well as land grabbers and sand mafia.
No solution for govt. buildings on tank beds
It is still unclear about what will happen to government buildings that have come up on such land. There are at least a dozen government buildings that have been constructed on the bed of Kolaramma tank in the city. The buildings include Government College for Women, a couple of hostels run by Social Welfare Department and the aquarium of the Fisheries Department. Some buildings are even under construction on the tank bed.
Critical Analysis: These constructions along with private encroachments have resulted in the disappearance of most of the once-sprawling Kolaramma tank. There is no separate law for government departments in connection with encroachments on tank beds.
